ups smart package smart facility technology

The Problem

Users were not able to be able to track mis-loads which was affecting business revenue and customer satisfaction.

SOLUTION

Created a mobile application that fed the new mis loads from the wearables, into loads onto the mobile device. This allowed real time data to be fed and loaders to resolve the loads in a timely fashion.

My role

I conducted field and user research as well as prototyped all designs. An iterative process working closely with managers and product owners.

The Problem

Users did not have a good way to manage mis-loads sometimes missing the scan before it was too late. It was a combination of time and trying to get the packages on the car in time for delivery and the devices not reading properly.

Field Research

I conducted field research to understand how users were using the new RFID wearables and how that read into pilot application to understand some of the loop holes with smart wearables and device.

Field Research Results

Users were concerned with wearables, both with electric waves “getting in their blood stream”, and the wearables were sometimes uncomfortable to wear.

The mobile device sometimes missed scans which could cause a mis-load causing serious problems. If mis-load was miscounted, and on the truck it would delay operations time and efficiency.

The Goal

We worked with the business and stakeholders to design a mobile application that was more intuitive than the pilot, with additional features to help drive the smart technology initiative.
The goal was being able to have loaders wear the wearables and have the data automatically fed to the mobile device. Users then could manage loads and misloads in one application making it easier to manage in real time.

by creating a mobile device for users that tracked misloads and read wearable scan data in real time we were able to increase users time and efficiency on loading by over 40%.

Results:

  • Reduced mis-loads 50% with real-time alerts”

Below are some of the workflows we built for users to help them manage misloads and complete their operational tasks for managing mis-loads.

MANAGE LOAD Types

Users had the ability to manage different type of incorrect loads through the mobile device to ensure proper packages were properly managed prior to route.

MANAGE MISLOADS

Users now had a quick and easy to efficiently resolve misloads in one application within the load itself to track it quick and easily all in one application.

Load SETUP

Users now had the ability to setup loads on the mobile device prior to scanning packages with the option of also tracking the mis-loads.

Metal Tag Audit

Created a metal tag audit option for both packages and vehicles. This helps track all assets that UPS is carrying which allows users to manage its extensive inventory and minimize losses due to theft or damage. All the following saving business inventory and customer satisfaction.
